A hospital stay can be hard on your child and family. It's vital to have a room where your child can relax and feel safe.

The children's inpatient unit at UPMC Hamot:

  • Is warm and playful, helping your child and loved ones feel more at ease throughout their care journey.
  • Uses child-sized wheelchairs and Power Wheels™ for transport to give your child a sense of control during this stressful time.
  • Has separate, but still equally colorful, treatment and procedure spaces. This means your child's room is a place of healing and rest.

Playful Comforts for Your Child's Stay with Us

We know the value of play for children.

It gives them a way to express themselves. It can also help them work through some of the complex feelings that may arise during a hospital stay.

To that end, the unit features an age-appropriate playroom. Your child and their siblings can play games, read books, and socialize with other kids.

Each inpatient room also includes a TV and Xbox™ gaming system to watch movies or play video games.

Our goal is to help children and families feel a sense of normalcy in the hospital setting.

Hospitalists: Vital Members of Your Child's Care Team

In the UPMC Children's inpatient unit, hospitalists play a key role on a child's care team.

These doctors:

  • See and care for children while they're in the hospital.
  • Have special training in caring for newborns just after birth.
  • Are in constant contact with your child's pediatrician.
  • Provide seamless care from admission through discharge.

Our Hours

Our pediatric inpatient unit follows the same visiting hours policy as the main hospital.

To Refer a Patient to the Children's Inpatient Unit at UPMC Hamot

Providers can refer a patient to the children's inpatient unit by:

  1. Calling the main Children's MedCall number at 412-692-5000.
  2. Asking for the on-call pediatric hospitalist or specialist to discuss your referral.
