Hospitalists at UPMC Hamot

UPMC Content 2

A hospitalist is a doctor whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Patients under the care of a hospitalist typically have shorter hospital stays.

UPMC Hamot's hospitalists are all trained in either internal or family medicine and are responsible for:

  • Coordinating care of hospitalized adults from the time they are admitted to the time they leave the hospital.
  • Providing around-the-clock inpatient care.
  • Responding quickly in case of emergencies or changes in a patient’s condition.
  • Working directly with a highly-skilled team of physician assistants and nurse practitioners who also care for patients in the hospital.
  • Keeping primary care physicians updated on the health status of hospitalized patients.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hospitalists

Hospitalists only care for patients while they are in the hospital. Upon discharge, your medical records will be available to your primary care physician (PCP) to aid in the continuum of care.

Your PCP can:

  • Handle any follow-up care.
  • Write prescription refills.
  • Answer any questions you may have.

Please have your pharmacy call 814-877-4992.

Please contact your PCP about refills. He or she will know if that medication is still appropriate for you.

Contact your PCP's office for anything you need after discharge. He or she will have all the records from your hospital stay and can complete any paperwork you need.
