UPMC Harrisburg – Harrisburg, Pa.
The internal medicine residency at UPMC Harrisburg offers a highly structured teaching curriculum in a community environment. Our program has several innovative teaching models in place, such as:
- Business skills and leadership workshops.
- Intensive board review by an independent consultant.
- Ongoing “mock code” sessions.
- Practical clinical skills course during the internship.
We also educate our faculty and residents in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). POCUS is at the forefront of internal medicine training.
House staff training takes place at UPMC Harrisburg, the main site for inpatient rotations. Outpatient continuity/ambulatory clinic experiences happen at the Kline Health Center. In addition, private doctor offices provide subspecialty ambulatory experiences in a real-life practice setting.

UPMC Mercy – Pittsburgh, Pa.
UPMC Mercy and its training programs have a rich history. Mercy Hospital was the first hospital in Pittsburgh and the region’s first training hospital for resident doctors.
It welcomed everyone, regardless of race, nationality, age, gender, or religion. UPMC Mercy continues this tradition today, especially in caring for the underserved and vulnerable populations in our urban Pittsburgh setting.
We have more adult emergency department visits than any other UPMC hospital, and the only burn center in the UPMC system. UPMC Mercy is also a major referral center for people in the tristate region of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio.
As a resident, you'll provide compassionate care and thrive in a supportive and caring work and learning environment. Our goal is for our residents to become knowledgeable, capable, dedicated, and compassionate doctors. These are doctors who have prepared to meet the challenges of a fellowship or clinical practice after residency.
We attribute the success of our graduates to the welcoming, encouraging, inquisitive, and energetic culture they help to create while training at UPMC Mercy. We are family. We are Mercy.
