Interventional Psychiatric Treatment Options at UPMC

In the field of psychiatry, first-line treatment usually consists of psychotherapy, or counseling, and medication. Most patients receive benefits and maintain improvement from these treatments. In interventional psychiatry, the physician "intervenes," or provides a treatment to the patient who has not received benefit from standard treatments.

The Center for Interventional Psychiatry specializes in the use of ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) and TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) when first-line, or standard treatment options have failed. Our clinical team has been performing ECT for 30 years, and began offering TMS in July of 2016. We offer our interventional services for both inpatients and outpatients.

Why Choose the Center for Interventional Psychiatry?

Our team of specialists has more than 30 years' experience, and is committed to a mission of treating patients who are struggling to overcome a psychiatric disorder. In addition to providing patient care, our faculty are constantly looking for new treatments, conducting research studies, and training the next generation of interventional psychiatry providers around the world.
