Mental Health Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment

For psychiatric disorders, as with any illness, successful treatment begins with a complete and accurate assessment. At UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, we assess people of all ages in many settings, including a 24-hour ER.

There's no blood test or x-ray for mental illness, although they can help rule out any physical causes of your symptoms.

We can diagnose you by:

  • Learning about your health history.
  • Speaking to your family members with your consent. We value their input and urge them to come with you and take part in your assessment.
  • Deciding whether a mental issue or other health problems is the true cause of your symptoms.

A diagnosis of mental illness can help you begin treatment toward a potential cure. It also can lessen some emotional weight by putting a name to what’s causing you pain. You can learn about what health risks your condition has and how you can battle them.

We will thoroughly discuss your condition, including symptoms and treatment options, with you and your loved ones. Our goal is to help you understand your illness and how you can overcome it.

Types of Mental Health Treatments We Offer

If you receive a diagnosis of a mental health condition, staff at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital can help you. Treatment can help cure your condition or lessen your symptoms. We hope successful treatment can lead to a healthier life for you.

Your treatment will depend on your specific case, including condition and symptoms. Based on your mental health assessment, clinicians will recommend the program that will be most helpful and tailor a treatment plan to meet the specific needs of the individual.

Treatment is a joint effort between the patient, family members, and staff and may include:

  • Intensive outpatient care
  • Routine outpatient care
  • Partial hospitalization
  • Inpatient care
  • Residential treatment
  • One-on-one and group therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Medicine

In addition to the treatment you can receive at our nearly 300-bed hospital in Oakland, we also operate the Behavioral Health Network. With many locations throughout western Pa., the Behavioral Health Network allows us to offer treatment in a wider part of the region.

Inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care

Depending on your situation, UPMC can provide either inpatient or outpatient psychiatric treatment. We will discuss the treatment options with you and your loved ones and decide which works best for you.

Inpatient care often is best for people with serious mental health conditions or addictions who need around-the-clock evaluation and treatment. You would stay at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital or one of our other behavioral health centers in western Pennsylvania.

Stays can be as short as one night but can last longer based on your needs.

The benefits of inpatient care include:

  • Round-the-clock access to psychiatrists, nurses, and other mental health staff.
  • A break from the daily mental triggers you may have in your home.
  • Daily sessions with the care team, in both one-on-one and group settings.
  • Full focus on your emotional recovery.
  • Controlled access to drugs or alcohol (for people with addiction), or food (for people with eating disorders).
  • Visits from loved your ones.

If you don't need 24/7 psychiatric help, an outpatient treatment plan might be the best option. Outpatient care may include an intensive treatment program and/or counseling.

The benefits of outpatient care include:

  • No overnight stays.
  • Flexible scheduling of therapy sessions.
  • The ability to keep your normal routine.
  • More freedom.
  • Lower cost.

Another option is a partial psychiatric stay in the hospital. This approach requires more treatment each week but still allows you to stay at home when not at therapy.

Emergency and crisis intervention

Mental health crises can happen in an instant, and immediate treatment can be necessary..

UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital’s Diagnostic Evaluation Center (DEC) is open 24 hours a day for people of all ages.

The DEC offers:

  • Assessments for psychiatric and substance abuse conditions
  • Walk-in therapy
  • Inpatient care
  • Referrals

You do not need a doctor to refer you to the DEC. Our doctors, nurses, and staff will work with you to find the right treatment.
