During a heart attack, every minute is critical, not only for saving lives, but also for salvaging as much of the heart’s function as possible. That’s why UPMC Hamot initiated a direct-to-cath lab protocol. Heart attack patients are routed directly to the UPMC Hamot cath lab for immediate intervention and essential treatment, bypassing the Emergency Department altogether. This saves precious time and valuable heart muscle. At UPMC Hamot, our door-to-balloon time average is just 45 minutes, approximately half the national benchmark.
UPMC Hamot is one of only a few providers in the nation approved to perform innovative transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures. A TAVR procedure implants an artificial aortic valve inside a patient’s faulty valve, eliminating the need for a heart-lung machine during surgery. This makes the procedure far less risky for higher-risk patients, including those of advanced age or who have health conditions preventing them from undergoing traditional bypass surgery.
