As a dietetic technician, Sue S. has a passion for the people she serves.
“I enjoy doing what I’m doing,” she says. “I’m in the field that I like. I like helping patients see the progress, get better, and go home.”
Sue first joined UPMC in the early 1990s and has continued to build a rewarding career. She strives to deliver personalized care and meet patients where they are.
For some, that can mean talking to them and learning their food preferences. For others, it’s a simple follow-up visit to check in and see how they’re doing.
“It’s so satisfying to me,” Sue says. “I feel like I am doing what I am supposed to. That’s my job. I want to see positive outcomes.”
While Sue has made an impact on her patients, they’ve also made a lasting impact on her.
“They give you things that you don’t realize,” she says. “They teach you something about life in general and living.”
Sue says working in a hospital puts everything in perspective and keeps her humble.
That humble approach is likely due to being the 11th of 12 children in her family. Sue’s parents kept their household organized, making sure everyone contributed.
“We were encouraged to pull our own weight, and we were helping out as a family,” Sue recalls.
As a wife, mother of two sons, and grandmother of six, she continues to pass down those lessons to her family and patients.
“They lift you up, too,” Sue says of her patients. “There are times when they say things that you appreciate, and you’re not expecting it, but they’ll make nice comments.”
At UPMC, Life Changing Medicine means making a lasting impact through first-class patient care.
