UPMC in North Central Pa.

UPMC provides more than 150 residencies and fellowships, spanning many specialties throughout Pennsylvania.

The specialties below have at least three programs within UPMC.

UPMC in Central Pa. – Harrisburg, Pa.

UPMC in Central Pa.'s five-year general surgery residency program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and will provide you with a broad range of surgical opportunities.

Located in the heart of Central Pa., UPMC in Central Pa.'s program offers expert faculty and strong didactic activities to help you develop your surgical skills and grow as a doctor. Our program will prepare you for your surgical career and certification by the American Board of Surgery.

Our primary site, UPMC Harrisburg, is a full-service acute care hospital with approximately 400 beds in downtown Harrisburg. The hospital serves as the hub for the UPMC network in Central Pa.

UPMC Harrisburg features:

  • Advanced pediatric care with UPMC Children’s Harrisburg in partnership with UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
  • Cardiology care through UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute.
  • Comprehensive stroke.
  • A kidney transplant center.
  • Neurosciences.
  • A state-of-the-art labor and delivery area with a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
  • Women’s health.

UPMC Horizon – Farrell, Pa.

Our general surgery residents are based out of UPMC Jameson, a rapidly expanding community hospital in New Castle, Pa., but also cover UPMC Horizon. Its Shenango Valley campus is located about 20 minutes north in Farrell, Pa.

We see early and frequent operative exposure as an advantage of the training program at UPMC Horizon. Beginning in your intern year, you'll experience open, laparoscopic, robotic-assisted, and endovascular cases.

General surgery residents at UPMC Horizon enjoy and benefit from a small and close-knit environment among residents and faculty. This has consistently delivered a high-quality training program with excellent fellowship matches and work opportunities. It also offers access to world-class tertiary care facilities.

UPMC Mercy – Pittsburgh, Pa.

We offer a strong core experience in both ambulatory and inpatient surgery.

Your status as a resident ensures a diverse case mix due to our designation as a Level I Trauma Center and our busy:

  • Burn unit.
  • Gastrointestinal, vascular, and colorectal experiences.
  • Thoracic services.

UPMC Mercy has several operating rooms designed for advanced endovascular surgery and a state-of-the-art endoscopy and robotic simulator. We also have on-campus facilities for resident training in endoscopy, microvascular surgery, and laparoscopy.

UPMC Presbyterian – Pittsburgh, Pa.

Our general surgery residency training program will provide you with basic and advanced surgical experience. This is the case whether you're seeking a career in general surgery or plan to undertake further training in a surgical specialty.

The program is flexible and meets the needs of surgeons preparing for community practice, academic, and research roles. It's broad-based, but the residency emphasizes in-depth training.

It offers graded operative responsibilities for a few select trainees rather than superficial and limited training for a large number. The program size encourages esprit de corps and a commitment to high standards in care.

UPMC Altoona – Altoona, Pa.

As a family medicine resident at UPMC Altoona, you'll spend ample time in both the hospital and the office while enjoying an appropriate work-life balance.

Our broad-based training includes experiences in obstetrics and women’s health through our resident-run Pregnancy Care Center and Women’s Health and Wellness Center. We can arrange elective rotations within the United States and internationally.

We offer many curricular areas of concentration — similar to tracks — that allow you to shape your training. For instance, the rural medicine area of concentration lets residents do their continuity clinic in our rural offices.

You can also design your own area of concentration in other areas, including:

  • Aesthetics.
  • Global medicine.
  • Leadership.
  • Obstetrics.
  • Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).
  • Sports medicine.

UPMC in Central Pa.

The goal of UPMC in Central Pa.'s family medicine residency is to extend your medical education beyond the classroom, help you balance medical science with a human touch, and teach you how to interact effectively with patients and colleagues.

You'll receive ample training in both inpatient and outpatient settings while having an appropriate work-life balance.

Our program provides clinical instruction in performing common procedures in family medicine, including:

  • Colonoscopies.
  • Joint injections.
  • Pap smears.
  • Pelvic and speculum exams.
  • Skin excisions and biopsies.

UPMC Horizon – Farrell, Pa.

At UPMC Horizon, family medicine residents train in a small-town and rural environment. Our mission is for you to become an exceptional family medicine doctor who's ready to meet the needs of the community in which you live and practice.

We prepare our graduates with the necessary competence and skills to practice high-quality, population-based care in medically underserved communities. You'll have personalized opportunities for growth and mentorship. This includes areas of concentration in lifestyle medicine, global health, and women’s health.

Our training also features a strong inpatient and outpatient focus. Our family medicine faculty provide a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and expertise. We supplement this with one-on-one opportunities with our specialists who love to teach and train the next generation of doctors.

UPMC Lititz – Lititz, Pa.

UPMC Lititz is a small community hospital with the resources of a large academic center. We focus on preparing doctors for independent practice in a medical specialty.

  • Improve clinical competencies.
  • Acquire detailed factual knowledge in a specialty.

UPMC St. Margaret – Pittsburgh, Pa.

Nestled in the stunning landscapes of North Central Pa., our residency program attracts budding doctors nationwide. We prepare them for versatile careers in both urban and rural settings.

Whether you're certain of your future path or still exploring options, our comprehensive full-spectrum training ensures you’ll have the skills to thrive anywhere.

Rural Family Medicine Residency Program at UPMC in North Central Pa.

The UPMC Rural Family Medicine Residency in North Central Pa. offers a unique training option. Our mission is to train caring and skilled family doctors to serve these underserved settings.

UPMC Hamot – Erie, Pa.

The primary focus of the emergency medicine residency at UPMC Hamot is to train doctors to practice emergency medicine competently in any combination of academic, community, urban, and rural settings.

We're a high-volume Level II trauma center with no surgical residency program. Other elements that make this program unique include:

  • Individualized attention from attending doctors from day one.
  • Low level of competition from other learners.
  • Small residency size compared to the large volume of our emergency department.

Our goal is to train you to practice with compassion, respect, and a focus on service to patients, co-workers, and your community. Our supportive working and learning environment allows you to explore specific interests. These include emergency medical services, international health, and administration, so that you may realize future career goals as an emergency doctor.

UPMC in Central Pa. – Harrisburg, Pa.

This three-year emergency medicine residency is at UPMC Harrisburg, an urban hospital serving a diverse, underserved population. We're located in the capital of Pa. on the beautiful Susquehanna riverfront.

We designed our curriculum to serve and reflect the needs of our community. From three years of critical care and heavy pediatric exposure to rotations in street medicine and addiction medicine, you'll truly learn the breadth and depth of emergency medicine.

We believe we should personalize and tailor education to each learner. As a community academic hospital, we pride ourselves on:

  • An abundance of procedures.
  • Early resident autonomy.
  • Hands-on teaching.

UPMC Presbyterian – Pittsburgh, Pa.

The emergency medicine residency at UPMC Presbyterian encompasses a range of specialty, community, and pediatric care.

  • Practical clinical skills course during the internship.

We also educate our faculty and residents in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). POCUS is at the forefront of internal medicine training.

House staff training takes place at UPMC Harrisburg, the main site for inpatient rotations. Outpatient continuity/ambulatory clinic experiences happen at the Kline Health Center. In addition, private doctor offices provide subspecialty ambulatory experiences in a real-life practice setting.

UPMC Lititz – Lititz, Pa.

The UPMC Lititz internal medicine residency program focuses on both inpatient and ambulatory settings. This ensures graduates prepare for practicing internal medicine or pursuing fellowship training.

Your training will primarily occur in a community hospital setting, with select subspecialty rotations taking place at larger, tertiary care hospitals. We place a strong emphasis on residents’ well-being and work-life balance.

UPMC Mercy – Pittsburgh, Pa.

UPMC Mercy and its training programs have a rich history. Mercy Hospital was the first hospital in Pittsburgh and the region’s first training hospital for resident doctors.

It welcomed everyone, regardless of race, nationality, age, gender, or religion. UPMC Mercy continues this tradition today, especially in caring for the underserved and vulnerable populations in our urban Pittsburgh setting.

We have more adult emergency department visits than any other UPMC hospital, and the only burn center in the UPMC system. UPMC Mercy is also a major referral center for people in the tristate region of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio.

As a resident, you'll provide compassionate care and thrive in a supportive and caring work and learning environment. Our goal is for our residents to become knowledgeable, capable, dedicated, and compassionate doctors. These are doctors who have prepared to meet the challenges of a fellowship or clinical practice after residency.

We attribute the success of our graduates to the welcoming, encouraging, inquisitive, and energetic culture they help to create while training at UPMC Mercy. We are family. We are Mercy.

UPMC Presbyterian – Pittsburgh, Pa.

The UPMC Presbyterian Internal Medicine Residency Program develops academic doctors who go on to lead current and future health systems.

Our main teaching site is UPMC Presbyterian, a 900-bed academic hospital that provides tertiary care for the western Pennsylvania region and beyond. It also serves as a Level 1 Trauma Center and is an internationally renowned organ transplant center.

We have a close connection with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (a top 10 National Institutes of Health-funded institution). We also serve as the residency program affiliate for the internal medicine clerkships for Pitt medical students.

Our residency program is known for its innovative curriculum, resident-led rounds, and focus on mentorship. It's also known for opportunities to participate in groundbreaking research, care for vulnerable populations, and national expertise in medical education. You can also personalize your training through tracks and certificate programs.

Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at UPMC in Central Pa.

The UPMC in Central Pa. orthopaedic surgery residency takes place at UPMC Community Osteopathic in Harrisburg, Pa. However, residents work with teams at multiple Central Pa. locations, including urban and rural settings. In addition, we've developed affiliations for residents to do out rotations at major tertiary care facilities in Atlanta, Hershey, Pa., and Pittsburgh.

Our program is open to both osteopathic and allopathic candidates. As one of our residents, you'll learn about the many facets of general orthopaedics while also experiencing a high volume of training in a number of specialty areas.

This opportunity provides a diverse operative experience and education in the fields of:

Sports medicine, hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, orthopaedic spine, adult reconstruction and joint replacement, orthopaedic trauma, pediatric orthopaedics, and orthopaedic oncology.

Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at UPMC Hamot – Erie, Pa.

UPMC Hamot provides orthopaedic surgery residents with sophisticated experience in the surgical intervention required for trauma patients. Our patient care tower, which opened in 2021, has 64 beds. This includes the trauma-neuro intensive care unit (TNICU), cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), and medical intensive care unit (MICU).

Our orthopaedic surgery residency program is busy enough that you'll have surgical exposure to a broad range of orthopaedic conditions. At the same time, it's small and collegial enough that you'll complete the program with strong working relationships with fellow residents and faculty members.

Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at UPMC Presbyterian – Pittsburgh, Pa.

Through specialized clinical programs, the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provide the full range of established therapies. They serve a diverse population of patients while also developing new treatments.
