This exam evaluates the tissue of the breasts. Pictures of breast tissue are taken with sound waves, not x-rays.
There are no restrictions prior to a breast ultrasound.
If you have had a mammogram performed at another facility, you must bring your films with you. The sonogram cannot be performed without these films for reference, and your appointment will be rescheduled if you do not bring them. Images done at our associated facilities are already in our system.
You will be asked to change from your clothes into a hospital gown. You will be asked to lie on an exam table. Warm gel is applied to the skin, which helps to optimize the images. Pictures will be seen on a computer screen during the exam.
You may be asked to wait while the images are reviewed. The radiologist often rescans to help him/her compare the mammogram and sonogram films. This is not unusual; do not be alarmed if this happens.
The pictures are reviewed by the radiologist and the results are sent to your doctor. The results cannot be given to you by the sonographer administering the test.
If you have any questions, call your physician or call the UPMC Hamot Ultrasound Department at 814-877-2258.
If you cannot keep your appointment, please call our scheduling department at 814-877-6123 to reschedule.
