About the UPMC Sleep Medicine Center

UPMC Content 3

UPMC's Sleep Medicine Center — accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine — is the only multidisciplinary sleep medicine facility in western Pennsylvania.

The Sleep Medicine Center performs approximately 2,000 sleep studies annually for adult patients with all types of sleep disorders. The staff at the UPMC Sleep Medicine Center includes board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners, and registered sleep laboratory technologists.

During your first visit to the UPMC Sleep Medicine Center, a sleep medicine clinician will take a comprehensive sleep history and perform a physical examination.

If you have a bed partner who has witnessed you stop breathing, can verify loud snoring, or has observed other behaviors during your sleep, he or she is welcome to attend this visit with you.

At the end of this visit, the doctor will determine if a sleep study is needed to further evaluate your sleep. Our staff will schedule you for a sleep study and other diagnostic studies, if necessary.

When your sleep study is completed, you should schedule a return clinic visit in 4 to 8 weeks to review your study results. If you are prescribed therapy for sleep apnea such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BPAP) therapy, please bring your equipment to the clinic so it can be checked by our technicians.

As with many medical conditions, regular follow-up with your physician is important for you to achieve the best results from therapy.
