Thomas G. Gleason, M.D., also is co-director of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. In this expanded role, Dr. Gleason collaborates with other co-directors, Drs. Victor Morell, Joon Sup Lee, Mark Gladwin and Michel Makaroun on strategic management of the Institute. 

Dr. Gleason joined the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC in 2006 after serving as assistant professor of surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and director of the Thoracic Aortic Surgery Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute in Chicago.

An invited lecturer across the U.S. and Canada, Dr. Gleason specializes in the repair of thoracic aortic diseases including aneurysms, dissections, traumatic injuries and genetic disorders such as bicuspid aortic valve and Marfan syndrome.

Dr. Gleason received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and also earned his master’s degree in surgery from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He completed a surgical internship, residency and research fellowship at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center. Dr. Gleason also performed a cardiothoracic surgery residency and cardiac surgery fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Gleason is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the American Heart Association, American Medical Association, International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Society of Thoracic Surgerons, and Association for Academic Surgery. He also serves as chairman of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ Taskforce on Guidelines for Thoracic Aortic Surgery. Dr. Gleason has been appointed fellowship in the American College of Cardiology, American College of Chest Physicians and American College of Surgeons.

The author or co-author of more than 50 professional journal articles, Dr. Gleason also has contributed to over 20 book chapters and editorials. He is a consulting reviewer for professional journals including Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of American College of Cardiology, and Circulation
