Clifford E. Brubaker, PhD

​Clifford E. Brubaker, PhD, has been professor and dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh since 1991. The author of four U.S. patents for inventions relating to mobility and seating, he has worked in the areas of biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology for more than 30 years.

A former director or co-director of three Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers at Pitt and the University of Virginia, Dr. Brubaker currently holds secondary academic appointments in the Pitt School of Medicine’s Department of Neurological Surgery, the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Pitt’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, and Xian Jiaotong University, Xian, China.

Dr. Brubaker is a founding member, fellow and former president of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America, a founding fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and a member of the inaugural class of Fellows of the Biomedical Engineering Society.

Prior to receiving his doctorate degree in exercise physiology from the University of Oregon, Dr. Brubaker earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in physical education from Ball State University.
