Sundaram Hariharan, MD

Sundaram Hariharan, MD, is UPMC’s medical director of kidney and pancreas transplantation, and medical director of transplant nephrology. He is a professor of medicine (Renal-Electrolyte Division) and surgery (Transplant Surgery) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Hariharan received his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and medical degree from the University of Bombay in India. He went on to become a Diplomate of National Board in the field of nephrology in New Delhi, India. Dr. Hariharan continued his medical training and served as a resident in internal medicine at the LTMM College Hospital of Bombay before completing a nephrology fellowship at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Ohio.

After his fellowship, he was appointed as an assistant professor in medicine and nephrology at the University of Cincinnati. Subsequently, he joined the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee as an associate professor in medicine and nephrology. He was promoted to full professor and was subsequently awarded tenure professor of medicine. He was the medical director of the Renal Transplant program at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the hospital’s interim director of the Solid Organ Transplant Center prior to moving to UPMC.

Dr. Hariharan has extensive clinical experience in managing kidney and pancreas transplant programs with excellent outcomes. He is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of transplant nephrology, with certifications in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of professional and honorary societies including the American Society of Nephrology, American Society of Transplant Physicians, and the International Transplant Society. His scientific contributions cover a variety of important renal transplant topics, including recurrent and de novo diseases after renal transplantation, long-term kidney transplant survival, surrogate markers for renal transplant outcome and BKV infection after renal transplantation.
